Lawn Mower RnD

Client: Fox and Lion Digital
Software: 3ds Max, TyFlow

Process: Testing how to potentially cut some grass in TyFlow with a lawn mower. Grass geometry was pre-cut and fed into TyFlow where it was then converted to cloth, bound at the cut locations, and then bound to the ground. The grass collides with the mower geometry using Particle Physics bending the blades as they pass under the front edge of the mower and their binding stiffness allows them to bend back upright after they clear the mower's edge. The mower's blade "cuts" the grass by breaking the "cut" bindings when the particles are close enough to the blade which is determined by a Surface Test Operator. The cut blades of grass are then sucked upward and rotate about.
